History of Memorial Day

a-1 home care pasadena elderly care

A year after the Civil War ended back in 1866, Waterloo, N.Y. was the birthplace of Memorial day where local ceremonies were first held to honor veterans, and local businesses closed and people flew flags at half-staff. Two years later, Major General John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day was established so the nation can “decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers” on  May 30th.  It was not until a century later that the Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to put Memorial on the last Monday in May as we know it today.  Although a majority of the newer generations do not commemorate Memorial Day traditionally, it is still important to keep that tradition going for future generations due to the importance and the magnitude of Memorial day.

Veterans and seniors have a special place in A-1 Home Care’s heart because of what their generations have done to shape our world.  As a result, our mission is to give back to them with what we know best, which is our home care service. Caregivers from A-1 Home Care in Downey are professional, compassionate, and reliable.  Each of them have at least 2 years of experience, CPR certification, and a clean criminal background.  They also have the flexibility to work in Arthritis Care, Cancer Care,  After Surgery Care, Incontinence Care Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Hospice Care, Heart Attack CareKidney Disease Care and more.  We cover all areas in Los Angeles and Orange County, including DowneyWhittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Cerritos, Long Beach, Torrance,BurbankPasadena, Covina, Monrovia, and more.

How A-1 Home Care can Help Legal Guardians

When we think of legal guardians, we instinctively think mother or father, but thanks to elder law that no longer is the case.  Elder Law appoints a legal guardian to a person who can no longer take care of their own health and finances.  The newly appointed guardians have to then manage both of these for the certain individual, and this usually adds stress to the legal guardian.  Fear not, for there are services that are available that will help ease the work and help with the transition.

People do not stop needing assistance during any part of the day, so that is why A-1 Home Care offers its services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Emergencies and accidents happen, so we want to make sure that our caregivers are available to provide aide.  Essentially how it works is that after you call we find the caregiver that best suits your needs, then they are sent to your household to begin the home care services.  They can either be hired on an hourly basis or a 24 hour live-in, that all depends on what you would like to do.  Our caregivers are trained professionals, all of them have a minimum of two years of experience being caregivers.  Some of the great services that are available to legal guardians are after surgery care, arthritis care, brain injury care, senior care, elder care, home helpers, hospital sitters, personal services, heart attack care, hospice care, respite care, dementia care, and many more.

While it may be tough adjusting to the fact that you are legal responsible for someone else’s well being, you don’t have to be alone in the process.  Let A-1 Home Care help you with all of the work.

Arthritis Care at Home

a-1 downey arthritis

Arthritis can cause so much pain that it interferes with a person’s life. As a caregiver, what can you do to help relief some of that pain? There are many changes you can help implement to decrease the level of discomfort for a loved one or client.

Healthy Lifestyle

Maintaining a healthy weight is very important for someone suffering from arthritis. The excess weight a client or loved one might carry can put extra stress on the joints thus making the deterioration or inflammation worse.  Encourage your loved one to implement a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis and rest when needed to stimulate the muscle around the joints.

Protecting the Joints

Protecting the joints from further deterioration is important. Modify activities if certain activity hurts the client or loved one’s joints. Refrain from putting pressure on the joints, use healthier and stronger joints to help lift objects or activities. Avoid activities or exercises that can cause inflammation or worsening of the joints.  You can help relief pain by applying heat or cold to the swollen or painful joints.
