History of Memorial Day

a-1 home care pasadena elderly care

A year after the Civil War ended back in 1866, Waterloo, N.Y. was the birthplace of Memorial day where local ceremonies were first held to honor veterans, and local businesses closed and people flew flags at half-staff. Two years later, Major General John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day was established so the nation can “decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers” on  May 30th.  It was not until a century later that the Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to put Memorial on the last Monday in May as we know it today.  Although a majority of the newer generations do not commemorate Memorial Day traditionally, it is still important to keep that tradition going for future generations due to the importance and the magnitude of Memorial day.

Veterans and seniors have a special place in A-1 Home Care’s heart because of what their generations have done to shape our world.  As a result, our mission is to give back to them with what we know best, which is our home care service. Caregivers from A-1 Home Care in Downey are professional, compassionate, and reliable.  Each of them have at least 2 years of experience, CPR certification, and a clean criminal background.  They also have the flexibility to work in Arthritis Care, Cancer Care,  After Surgery Care, Incontinence Care Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Hospice Care, Heart Attack CareKidney Disease Care and more.  We cover all areas in Los Angeles and Orange County, including DowneyWhittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Cerritos, Long Beach, Torrance,BurbankPasadena, Covina, Monrovia, and more.

What Should Your Target Heart Rate Be?

Grandmother with Walker

You might be thinking “I exercise 30 minutes daily, my heart must be in tip top shape!”.  However, exercising is all about getting the heart pumping. If you are not meeting your target heart rate zone, or you are over-exercising, neither is reaching your health potential.  For someone who is 25 years old, their average maximum heart rate can be around 200 beats per minute.  However, for seniors 65 years old and over, it should hover around 150 beats per minute.  According to the American Heart Association, if the heart rate is too high, you are straining yourself.  However, if it is too low, then be sure to push yourself a bit harder!  The recommended area is about 85% of your recommended maximum average heart rate (for seniors that is about 128 beats per minute), that means you are pushing yourself without stressing the heart, while continue to stay in shape.  So during this American Heart Month and beyond, try to reach your appropriate heart rate to stay in good health and fitness!

Record Keeping as a Conservator of the Estate

hospice care orange county a-1 home care

Because the conservator is handling the financial assets of another person, it is mandatory to keep records of all the financial transactions that affect the estate.  Furthermore, record keeping is vital because of accounting purposes.  As a result, it is a good practice as a conservator of the estate to keep receipts of all purchases, record for all money and property you might have received, date of each transaction, and more.  A year after the conservatorship appointment,  the conservator must file a petition to request a court review and approve the accounting according to the Superior Court of California in San Bernardino.  Be prepared, because failure to file the required accounting information could mean the removal as the conservator altogether.

If you act as both the conservator of the estate and the person, things can be extremely overwhelming.  So A-1 Home Care in Downey is here to help you out with all the personal care requirements.  We are an in-home care agency that serves in Alzheimer’s Care, Parkinson Care, Arthritis Care, Bipolar Care, Special Needs Care, Diabetic Care, Incontinence Care, Hospice Care, After surgery Care, and other Elderly Care Services. Stay One Step Ahead of Your Metastatic Prostate Cancer

When it comes to fighting metastatic prostate cancer, transparency is key to receiving the best care.  The importance of having a constant communication with your physician can often mean the difference in quality of life of the patient.  In the CancerCare.org workshop “Update on Metastatic Prostate Cancer: What’s New?“, Dr Michael Zelefsky stressed that by having a constant dialogue with the care team, it makes managing current symptoms and anticipating or preventing future symptoms a much simpler task.  It enables the doctor to have the confidence to prescribe the right medication, and find the best balance between the amount of therapy needed.  This does not limit to prostate cancer, or any cancer for that matter.  If you have loved ones suffering from a serious illness, try to stay ahead and maintain the constant dialogue with the doctors and physicians.
