Downey In-Home Care: Groundbreaking Research on Parkinson’s Disease

a-1 home care eldercare temple cityParkinson’s Disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects muscle movement.  In the beginning stages, the development is gradual, manifesting signs such as a barely noticeable tremor in one hand, but in advanced stages of Parkinson’s, it greatly reduces movement and causes pain and stiffness.  In the latest development on Parkinson’s Disease, a team of researchers from the University of Montreal and the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) at McGill University found two key genes that provide insight into this autoimmune disease.

The two genes, known as PINK1 and Parkin, are required to prevent attacks by the immune system.  When these genes are dysfunctional, a presence of small proteins known as antigens forms, and antigens activate autoimmune attacks in Parkinson’s patients.  These findings, found in the June 2016 issue of the journal Cell, are further supported by another study in a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease where the two genes are absent.  Elderly patients in advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease will require increased functional in-home assistance with daily living activities over time.

Caregiver Can Help Seniors Improve Both Body and Mind

A-1 Home Care therapeutic exercise

Research has shown that there is growth in brain neurons after a few days or weeks of regular physical activity.  So does this mean exercise can help improve a person’s cognitive functions?  In a study, the fittest individuals scored the highest in coordination, scheduling, planning, and memory.  Furthermore, there is a 35% lower occurrence of dementia for those who walk at least three times a week. While these are not definitive proof that physical exercise leads to benefits in cognitive functions among seniors and elderly,  it is still making a strong case for such theories.  Whether or not it helps improve your cognitive function, regular exercise should still be in everyone’s routine to live a long a healthy life!

We here at A-1 Home Care in Downey understand the limitations some seniors have when they want to exercise, and our caregivers have the experience and knowledge to assist and teach them the more senior-friendly ways to exercise.  Our quality caregivers are experts in Arthritis Care, After Surgery Care, Cancer Care, Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Incontinence Care, Hospice Care, Heart Attack Care, Kidney Disease Care and more.  We are proud to have been in business and helping seniors and the elderly for over 20 years, and look forward to providing assistance to more people in Downey, Whittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Cerritos, Long Beach, Torrance, Santa Monica, Burbank, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Covina, Monrovia, and surrounding areas in Los Angeles and Orange County.

Caregivers Keep us Seniors Safe and Happy this Fall Season

a-1 home care senior and elder dementia

It’s starting to get cold now that we’ve reached November. If the home is not properly insulated, then not only does heat escape, but it also drives the heating costs up to stay warm. Some areas, even in sunny California, can form icy roads during the colder days and pose danger to all drivers, especially to the older drivers.  Staying active is important during the winter months. It helps to keep seniors fit, get their blood flowing, keep warm and stay healthy.  If it is too cold to exercise outdoor, try arranging some space at home to exercise at home.

Caregivers from A-1 Home Care in Downey will make sure your elderly loved ones are safe when they are on the job.  We make sure to be selective when hiring our care providers, requiring at least 2 years of experience, CPR certification, and clean criminal background.  They are experts in Arthritis CareDiabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, After Surgery Care, Cancer Care,  Incontinence Care, Hospice Care, Heart Attack Care, Kidney Disease Care and more.  Clients in Downey, Whittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Cerritos, Long Beach, Torrance, Santa Monica, Burbank,Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Covina, Monrovia, and surrounding areas inLos Angeles and Orange County have all enjoyed our services since 1991, so you will surely have a peace of mind when using one of our services.

Reduce Hospital Readmissions with Home Care Services

????????????????????????????????????????Too many seniors are being left on their own to deal with recovery after surgery.  Hospital staff are notorious for communicating inadequate information to their patients and their families regarding post-acute care, and families are ill-equipped to deal with patient care that may require special training, such as changing a colostomy bag for a loved one who suffers from bowel cancer.  In this article, A-1 Home Care lists some of the reasons why hospital readmission is on the rise:

Insufficient information for care providersCaregivers receive inadequate information about their care recipients after the elderly are discharged from the hospital.  Gaps of important patient information leaves the caregiver in the dark about the patient’s specific after-care needs, resulting in failure to assist the patient in full recovery.

Lack of support for the elderly after hospital dischargeIn a poll of 200 surgeons, only 25% believe that vulnerable patients receive adequate support when they come home.  Due to lack of support, statistics show a 27% rise in hospital readmission just one month after discharge.

Inadequate planning processes provided by health care professionals.  Only 26% of surgeons who participated in a poll said that patients received thorough planning processes to ensure appropriate post-surgery care.

Limited access to help.  Even if the elderly received a long list of phone numbers they could call if they had any questions, they would not be able to reach many live operators if seniors are discharged on a weekend.

Until patient discharge practices improve, you are on your own to research post-surgery options for your loved one.  It is important not only to find a home care agency, but to find the right kind of home care agency that is licensed, bonded and insured, so that you will not receive home care services from questionable characters.  A-1 Home Care provides 24 hour post-surgery care and assistance with activities of daily living such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, bathing, grooming, transportation to appointments, and so much more.

Multiple Sclerosis Care Available for Seniors in Downey

Most people have heard of Multiple Sclerosis (or MS) but not many people actually know what it is, how it is caused, or what the symptoms entail? So to educate our audiences, potential clients and caregiver alike, we at A-1 Home Care of Downey would like to give you a small crash course on what having MS means to those diagnosed.

By definition, MS is an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system is directed against the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. What than means is that, an antigen (of which is currently unknown) triggers the immune system to work against the nervous system.

The effects can include damage to the myelin coating around the nerve fibers in the central nervous system (CNS) and to the nerve fibers themselves interferes with the transmission of nerve signals between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body. Disrupted nerve signals cause the symptoms of MS, which vary from one person to another and over time for any given individual, depending on where the damage occurs.

So what can be done if you or a loved on is diagnosed with MS? Since MS diagnosed patients often find themselves feeling weak, numb, stuff, unable to see properly, they may find that a caregiver is needed to assist them at home. Which is why A-1 Home Care would like to invite you to explore your options with us. As a home care agency, we strive to provide care for the elderly, terminally ill, and disabled. We find that delivering 24 Hour caregivers to your home is one of the best approaches to getting your independent life back.

History of Memorial Day

a-1 home care pasadena elderly care

A year after the Civil War ended back in 1866, Waterloo, N.Y. was the birthplace of Memorial day where local ceremonies were first held to honor veterans, and local businesses closed and people flew flags at half-staff. Two years later, Major General John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day was established so the nation can “decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers” on  May 30th.  It was not until a century later that the Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to put Memorial on the last Monday in May as we know it today.  Although a majority of the newer generations do not commemorate Memorial Day traditionally, it is still important to keep that tradition going for future generations due to the importance and the magnitude of Memorial day.

Veterans and seniors have a special place in A-1 Home Care’s heart because of what their generations have done to shape our world.  As a result, our mission is to give back to them with what we know best, which is our home care service. Caregivers from A-1 Home Care in Downey are professional, compassionate, and reliable.  Each of them have at least 2 years of experience, CPR certification, and a clean criminal background.  They also have the flexibility to work in Arthritis Care, Cancer Care,  After Surgery Care, Incontinence Care Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Hospice Care, Heart Attack CareKidney Disease Care and more.  We cover all areas in Los Angeles and Orange County, including DowneyWhittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Cerritos, Long Beach, Torrance,BurbankPasadena, Covina, Monrovia, and more.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects about 1 in 3 American adults with the risk becoming higher for Elderly and Senior individuals.  It can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and blindness if not controlled.  A healthy diet is one way to control Hypertension.  The DASH Diet designed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is rated the best overall diet by the U.S. News & World Report.  It emphasizes cutting back on sodium and eating lots of fruits and vegetables to get key nutrients such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, protein, and fiber.  You can find all the information you need to know about DASH here, including information about the research behind the diet as well as how to follow the diet.

Following a nutritious diet may not be the easiest feat to accomplish for Elderly and Senior individuals.  Especially for those who live alone, it can be hard to find motivation to cook food at home when they’re only cooking for themselves.  Some Elders and Seniors have chronic illnesses that make grocery shopping and cooking infeasible.  At A-1 Home Care, we can provide experienced caregivers who can prepare heart-healthy meals for your loved one – whether they’re in good health or have a chronic illness.  Even if your loved one is in good health, it’s imperative to maintain healthiness to protect against chronic illness and stay fully functional for years to come.
